①｟コーパス｠ untilとtill
untilとtillは意味･用法においてほぼ同じように用いられるが, tillの方がややくだけた語. 文頭ではわずかにuntilの方が好まれる傾向があるが, いずれも文頭で用いられるのは全体の10%にも満たない
また, 頻度においてtillはuntilの10分の1程度で, 〘米〙 より〘英〙 で好まれる(発音の注記).
②until, tillとto, up to
until, tillが基本的に継続していた期間の終点を表す時間の用法のみなのに対してto, up toは時間だけでなく場所･範囲などを表す場合にも用いる. up toの方がtoより強意的. 期間の終点を表すtoは通例from A to Bの形で用いる
e.g. John will stay here from Friday to ［until, till］ Sunday.: ジョンは金曜から日曜までここにいる予定だ (!コーパスuntil/till句はfrom句と用いるべきではないとする説があるが実際はよく用いる)
e.g. sizes (from) 12 to ［up to, ╳until, ╳till］ 26: 12から26までのサイズ (!範囲を表す場合, until tillは通例用いない) .

1. as far as: ...の限りでは
e.g. I could reach just up to his waist.: 彼のウエストまではちょうど届くことができる。
(also up until) until: 〜まで
A〈時間･程度など〉に至るまで(ずっと) (!up until/till Aは時間の継続を示す強意形;)
e.g. up to now I hadn't had a relationship.: 今まで私は交際したことがなかった。
2. indicating a maximum amount: 最大の量を指す
〈数値など〉まで, に達して
e.g. the process is expected to take up to two years.: そのプロセスは2年までは取れると期待される。
3. with negative or in questions as good as; good enough for: ~も同然で; ~に十分良い
｟話｠ 〖通例否定文･疑問文で〗Aにかなう, 匹敵する, 届く
e.g. I was not up to her standards.: 私は彼女の基準には及ばなかった。
capable of or fit for: 〜ができる、〜に合う
e.g. he is simply not up to the job.: 彼はその仕事に単純に合わない。
4. the duty, responsibility, or choice of (someone): (誰かに)義務、責任、選択権がある
«…するのは» A〈人〉次第である; A〈人〉の責任/仕事である «to do» ; 決めるのはAである
e.g. it was up to them to gauge the problem.: その問題を推し量るのは彼らの仕事だった。
5. informal occupied or busy with: 〜に従事して、忙しくて
｟くだけた話｠ A〈悪事など〉に(ひそかに)従事して; 計画して
e.g. what's he been up to?: 彼は何をしていたの？
